Mayor Eric Adams has been uniquely unpopular, with some of the lowest polling numbers for a New York City mayor ever recorded.
So this week, when he became the first mayor in the city’s modern history to be indicted, people across the country and political spectrum came together to both celebrate and make jokes.
Too soon? Probably.
That stopped no one. Some of the most popular memes, unsurprisingly, featured rats. In one widely shared post, a cloaked rodent took responsibility for turning the mayor in, saying: “Tell Eric. I want him to know it was me.”

Others called attention to the mayor’s residency, which has been called into question at least since he became a candidate for the job. The columnist Drew Magary posted on X that if Mr. Adams were sent to Rikers, he would finally become a New York City resident. (Mr. Adams would in fact be sent to a federal prison if convicted.)
